Dasun Shanaka was well out of his ground when Sanju Samson’s direct hit dislodged the bails from the stumps. But the umpire gave it not out. Why? Because the ball was dead. The reason for it being a dead ball was because the batters were not attempting a run. But there is more to the story.
The incident happened during the Super Over in the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 between India and Sri Lanka. This was after both sides had made 202/5 in 20 overs. Pathum Nissanka had helped Sri Lanka make a match of it with his brilliant 107. This so far is the only century in Asia Cup 2025.

It happened on the fourth delivery. Shanaka was given out caught behind off Arshdeep Singh and went for a review. He also was out of his ground and keeper Samson broke the stumps. The review gave the original caught behind decision not out and then India asked for the run out. The umpire however gave Shanaka not out.
Why was that? Because the ball was dead. The moment Shanaka was given out the ball was dead so anything that happened after it was not valid as the ball was no longer in play. Once he asked for a review, the ball was dead from that moment.

Arshdeep had appealed for a caught behind and the umpire initially gave it out. UltraEdge showed a clear gap. Umpire Gazi Sohel explained the rule to skipper Suryakumar Yadav as the Indian players wondered why Shanaka was not run out. It did not make much difference as Shanaka perished next ball and India needed just three to win, which they did in one ball.
