Pakistani player recalls getting scammed by government: Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) President Mohsin Naqvi presented a prize cheque of US$75,000 to Pakistani captain Salman Ali Agha. Agha first accepted the cheque and then posed for photographs.
New Delhi: Following India's title win in the 2025 Asia Cup, the BCCI announced a cash prize of ₹21 crore (approximately $2.1 billion) for its players. India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final. Despite the defeat, Pakistan received US$75,000 (approximately $6.65 million) as runner-up in the 2025 Asia Cup.
Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) President Mohsin Naqvi presented a US$ 75,000 prize check to Pakistani captain Salman Ali Agha. Agha first accepted the check and then posed for photographs. He then turned around, threw it in the air, and walked away smiling.
Amidst the check-throwing, a video of a former Pakistani player has gone viral on social media. In it, he is making sensational allegations against his own government of giving him a bounced check. This accusation has been made by none other than Saeed Ajmal, the former spinner who won the T20 World Cup for Pakistan in 2009. A video clip from Ajmal's 2023 podcast is going viral online, in which he is seen lamenting the Pakistani government's cruel joke against him.
Pakistan won its first T20 World Cup in 2009, defeating Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final of the T20 World Cup in London. Saeed Ajmal took 12 wickets in the tournament. Following the World Cup victory, then-Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani invited the Pakistani team for a photoshoot. During the event, the Pakistani players were presented with checks of 2.5 million Pakistani rupees each and posed for photos. However, the limit was reached when the Prime Minister's checks bounced.
Ajmal's sensational revelation
Former spinner Ajmal, who took more than 400 international wickets for Pakistan, revealed that after winning the 2009 T20 World Cup, each player in the Pakistan team was given a cheque of 2.5 million Pakistani rupees as a reward. However, these cheques bounced and the players did not receive a single rupee.
He said, “Immediately after we won the 2009 World Cup, there was a tour of Sri Lanka. The Prime Minister (then Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani) invited us and gave us cheques of 2.5 million rupees each. We were very happy because 2.5 million rupees was a huge amount in 2009. We received the cheques, but they bounced. "
Ajmal continued, “We said, 'The government's check bounced! ' They said the PCB chairman would give us a check. The chairman flatly refused, saying, 'If you got the check from there, where can I get it from? ‘Then we went on a tour to Sri Lanka. We didn't receive a single rupee from the government. We only received prize money from the ICC. After that, we lost badly on the Sri Lanka tour. "
Known as “The Magician, “Ajmal took a total of 447 wickets in 212 international matches between 2009 and 2014. He was also the number-one bowler in both ODI and T20I rankings. Saeed Ajmal was unable to return to the Pakistan team after 2015 due to the ICC's suspension for his suspect bowling action. He last played for Pakistan in April 2015 against Bangladesh
