A flight was diverted nearly 2,000 miles from its intended destination after a woman died mid-flight. The KLM flight departed Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport at 10.15am CEST on Sunday, with its intended destination being Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). However, the plane was forced to divert to an airport in the Canadian forest as authorities were made aware of an unresponsive 34-year-old woman on board the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner
The plane then landed at Yellowknife Airport in the Northwest Territories at 9.35am MT. The unresponsive passenger was rushed to a local hospital but died after doctors and paramedics tried to save her. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police offered no more information about the woman. Authorities said: "The matter remains under investigation at this time, in partnership with the Coroner's Service."
Flight Radar shows the plane's intended route and where it ended up landing. Yellowknife Airport is located 1,967 miles from Los Angeles International Airport.
When an emergency like this is declared on a flight, the pilot will decide whether or not the plane needs to land to seek assistance from emergency services on the ground.
This comes after a similar incident was reported on a flight from England to Nigeria. A flight left London Heathrow Airport on Sunday night and was due to land at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at around 5am on Monday.
However, the pilot was forced to divert the plane to Barcelona's El Prat airport just two and a half hours into the flight after a passenger fell ill. The passenger is believed to be a Nigerian man in his 80s.
Nigerian media reported that the man was in the UK for cancer treatment before falling ill on the flight back to Nigeria. He died on board the British Airways plane.
It was also reported that a pregnant woman on the flight suffered a medical episode. No more information about the woman was shared.
