At least 25 people lost their lives in a bus crash when a passenger bus overturned in Afghanistan’s capital early Wednesday, a senior Taliban official confirmed.

The accident occurred in the Arghandi area on the outskirts of Kabul during the early morning hours. The bus was carrying passengers from the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, and was headed towards the capital when it overturned.

Interior ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani said preliminary reports indicated reckless driving was responsible for the crash. Along with the fatalities, 27 others sustained injuries in the incident.

The tragic crash comes less than a week after another deadly crash in the western province of Herat, which killed around 80 people.

Herat crash took place late at night when a passenger bus rammed into a motorbike and a mini-truck on the highway connecting Iran with Herat city. Media reports indicated that several of the victims, among them women and children, were Afghan refugees making their way back from Iran.
