US President Donald Trump on Thursday lashed out at Somalia-born Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, saying people like her “come from places with nothing” and then try to “tell us how to run our country.”
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Omar “should be impeached." He then asked if Omar was originally from Somalia. When told she was, he continued with his criticism.
“So, how are they (Somalians) doing this? How’s their government? Do they have a president? Do they have a council? Do they have anything? I love these people – they come from a place with nothing, no anything, and then they tell us how to run our country.”
Trump’s remarks came amid backlash against Omar from Republicans and supporters of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a Trump ally who was assassinated on September 10. She has been accused of blaming Kirk for his own death after she retweeted a video that critics alleged implied such.
On Wednesday, the House narrowly voted 214–213 to table a resolution introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (Republican; South Carolina) to censure Omar for allegedly “smearing Charlie Kirk.” Four Republicans joined Democrats to defeat the measure.
Following the vote, Omar thanked colleagues who stood by her, writing on social media: “Thank you to my colleagues for having my back and not furthering lies on the House floor. Appreciate them safeguarding First Amendment protections and the usage of the censure. Finally some sanity in the House.”
Trump, who has been impeached twice, argued Omar’s censure should happen quickly: "It should happen fast. She was out of line."
